21 May 2021: The Lir Jet race preview
The Lir Jet runs tomorrow at Haydock Park in the Group 2 Sandy Lane Stakes over 6 furlongs for 3-year-olds at 3.35pm live on ITV4. Oisin Murphy has been booked to ride. He is drawn in stall 5 of 11, however Laws Of Indices is already a non-runner.
We have no regrets in skipping the French 2000 Guineas last weekend as the ground was extremely testing and over a mile it probably would have stretched The Lir Jet. It was a very hot race as you would expect for a French classic and the winner looked ultra-impressive for Aidan O’Brien.
Haydock Park have had a huge amount of rain and the ground is going to be heavy. A number of The Lir Jet’s opposition tomorrow have form on soft ground but on nothing as testing as what it is going to be tomorrow. We feel The Lir Jet should handle the ground as it was bordering on soft when he won at Royal Ascot last season, however it really is going to be a war of attrition!
Dragon Symbol for Archie Watson is likely to go off favourite after winning all four starts of his career to date but tomorrow represents a step up in class and a big unknown on the ground. Reports have been that he would prefer quick ground so there is a question mark against him, however he does look to be a very good horse.
Method was highly touted last season when winning a listed event at Newbury before disappointing in the Middle Park when finishing behind The Lir Jet. He finished 2nd on his final start of the season behind Winter Power who was hugely impressive at York last week. It is Method’s seasonal reappearance tomorrow.
Others to note are Isabella Giles who is dropping back to 6 furlongs for the first time since last July, Saint Lawrence has seen some support in the market for the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot this week and Mujbar is a heavy ground winner but finished well behind The Lir Jet at Newbury in the Greenham Stakes.
Michael Bell reported today “The Lir Jet is in good form. Oisin Murphy sat on him earlier in the week and was happy with him. The ground is going to be bottomless and it's going to be a case of which horse handles it the best. It looks a widely open race on paper as the betting suggests but hopefully The Lir Jet handles the ground and runs a big race. I'm looking forward to meeting the ticket ballot winners on track tomorrow. Best of luck to all involved.
The Lir Jet is currently priced around 7/1 which looks fair each way value.
