The Lir Jet was bitterly disappointing yesterday in the Sandy Lane Stakes at Haydock. Michael Bell’s team were very happy with him going into the race and thought a big run was on the cards, but it was evident halfway through the race that it wasn’t going to be his day. Oisin Murphy quite rightly looked after him once his chance had gone.
In terms of reasons why he disappointed, we’re all struggling to come up with excuses as he was sound after the race when checked over by the vet and he was scoped to see if there were any irregularities, however the scope showed nothing. We’re all at a bit of a loss. He will be closely monitored over the next couple of days to see if anything comes to light. It would be easy to just say he hated the ground, but the run was too bad to be true so we need to put a line through the race and move forward. The team will discuss plans in the coming week and if he seems to be okay there is still no reason why he will not be aimed at Royal Ascot. The main thing is he is home safe and can fight another day.
It was great to see so many members at Haydock yesterday and put faces to names. As racecourses keep opening up it will be great to meet even more of you. We’re all in this together, win, lose or draw! A stable visit to see The Lir Jet has been provisionally pencilled in for Thursday 8th July. More details will follow soon.
