The Lir Jet storms home to win Franklin Simpson

The Lir Jet returned to winning form in the Grade 2 Franklin Simpson Stakes at Kentucky Downs on Saturday evening winning by a very comfortable 1 and 3/4 lengths.

Ridden by Tyler Gaffalione, The Lir Jet never left the inside rail and finished his race very strongly to storm clear inside the final furlong.

Trainer Brendan Walsh said after the race: “I haven’t had The Lir Jet a very long time, but he came to me in very good shape from Michael Bell which made my job very easy. We just took him over when he got off the plane, and here we are.

I thought he was very impressive. It looked like he was always in control and got a great ride. It worked out great. I’m delighted for Qatar Racing who have now won this race for the third consecutive year, and also their partners in the horse, RacehorseClub and their members.

RacehorseClub have had an amazing start over in the U.K. and Ireland. Now Grade 2, Grade 3 and Royal Ascot winners not mentioning a runner up in the Grand National all within six months of launching. It’s great to be part of their team training this wonderful horse. We’ll see how he comes out of the race and make a plan going forwards.”

Tyler Gaffalione who took the ride said post race: “He broke sharp, grabbed a hold of the bit running up the hill. Even going down the hill he grabbed it a little more. I had to wait a little bit longer. He was taking me the whole way. As soon as a spot opened up he accelerated and finished the job."

A truly magnificent performance and huge congratulations to you all. It was not an easy decision to ship The Lir Jet to America but thankfully the planned has worked out and we thank you all for your continued support.

The Lir Jet Franklin Simpson Stakes Preview

The Lir Jet runs tomorrow at Kentucky Downs in the Franklin Simpson Stakes (Grade 2). Tyler Gaffalione is booked to ride. The race is at 5.18pm Kentucky time and 11.18pm UK time. The race is over 6.5f on the turf and is worth $600k (he runs for $300k as not Kentucky-bred).

A competitive race as you would expect for the grade. The two main contenders against The Lir Jet look to be Point By Me who is a Grade 1 winner having won the Secretariat Stakes and Miss Amulet who we are familiar with as she is a filly trained in Ireland by Ken Condon who has made the trip over.
The Lir Jet has a very good draw in stall 2 so the plan will be to make use of the draw and go forward. Tyler Gaffalione is a top jockey and has a very impressive strike rate around Kentucky Downs.
Brendan Walsh said "I'm very happy with The Lir Jet. The more time I've had him the more pleased I've become. He's settled in well and seems happy. I gave him a nice workout last weekend which put him spot on. I won the race last year with Guildsman and of the two horses, The Lir Jet would marginally be the better horse. It is a competitive race but I'd be disappointed if he wasn't in the mix.
Whatever he does tomorrow he will improve the more he gets used to the American training regime, however he's fit and well and ready for action. Fingers crossed he gives a good account of himself and runs a big race for you all."
It is advised to have an each way bet on The Lir Jet.

The Lir Jet to continue career in America

The Lir Jet has not been declared this morning for the Hungerford Stakes at Newbury on Saturday. He has suffered a very slight setback which will mean he will miss his engagement.

RacehorseClub’s Freddy Tylicki said “The Lir Jet has suffered a very slight setback yesterday, its nothing to worry about but enough to rule him out of Saturday’s race which is unfortunate. After looking through the racing calendar for the rest of the season in England it has been decided that more suitable races are available in America with great prize money on offer. He will be trained by Brendan Walsh in Kentucky who is doing great over there.

Both RacehorseClub and Qatar Racing Limited have had long chats with Michael Bell and together we feel the move is the best way forward for the horse. Michael has done a marvellous job with The Lir Jet with the highlight winning the Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot last year. RacehorseClub will continue to support Michael as and when the right horse comes along.

We feel it is an exciting opportunity for our members in The Lir Jet with the possibility of having a Breeders Cup runner. He ran very well at Keeneland in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf over a mile last year, so it’ll be great if Brendan can get him to Del Mar."

The Lir Jet will ship to America on Monday 23rd August.

His first assignment will be the $600,000 Franklin Simpson Stakes (Grade 2) at Kentucky Downs over 6.5 furlongs on 11th September.

The Lir Jet to head to Newbury

"The Lir Jet is training very well and seems to have gotten over his gelding operation. He looks great and I'm very pleased with him. The plan is to go to Newbury on 14th August to run in the Hungerford Stakes which is a Group 2 over 7 furlongs. He ran very well at Newbury earlier in the season in the Greenham so I'm hoping he'll be seen to good effect back on a track he's performed well at."

I’m really happy with The Lir Jet but I’d just like a little bit more time after his gelding operation and also the Lennox looks like it’s going to be a very hot contest. He ran brilliantly in the Greenham at Newbury earlier in the season so I believe he’ll go into that race with a really good chance.”

25 June 2021: The Lir Jet Criterion Stakes Preview

The Lir Jet runs tomorrow at Newmarket in the Group 3 Criterion Stakes over 7 furlongs for 3-year-olds and upwards at 3.15pm live on ITV.

Oisin Murphy has been booked to ride. He is drawn in stall 7 of 11 runners.

The Lir Jet ran a very good race last Friday at Royal Ascot finishing 7th in the Group 1 Commonwealth Cup. He didn’t break the quickest and was slightly outpaced in the early stages of the race but finished with a rattle when not having the best of luck in running. The ground was very heavy at Royal Ascot so a sounder surface will suit The Lir Jet tomorrow. He is stepping back up in trip to 7 furlongs, the same trip to when he was narrowly denied on his seasonal reappearance in the Greenham Stakes.

The Lir Jet has come out of Royal Ascot in top shape and Michael Bell feels he should be taking his chance.

Although it is only 8 days since his last run, Cieren Fallon reported he didn’t feel he had a hard race the way things panned out.

A competitive race with Kinross being the likely favourite after winning a Group 3 at Haydock four weeks ago earning a rating of 114. As a result he carries a three pounds penalty tomorrow. Glorious Journey finished third behind him beaten 2 3/4 lengths that day but is three pounds better off on this occasion. With Thanks was also in that race finishing 7th.

Lord Of The Lodge ran very well at Leopardstown last time out being narrowly denied in a Group 3. Duke Of Hazzard is a class act on his day but needs to find his form again.

Michael Bell reported today “The Lir Jet seems in excellent form. He’s come out of Ascot well. Cieren Fallon who rode him last week said he basically rode him blind because there was so much kick back so the horse didn’t have a particularly hard race. This 7 furlong Group 3 is on our doorstep, while ideally we’d like another few days between races, he’s eaten up well this week and trained well since Ascot. Hopefully he’ll run very well, this trip on decent ground is probably his optimum conditions and if he runs to his Greenham form he’ll go very close”.

The Lir Jet is currently priced around 14/1 which looks good each way value.

21 June 2021: The Lir Jet entered this Saturday at Newmarket

"The Lir Jet has come out of his race at Royal Ascot in terrific form. I was delighted with his run as things didn't quite work out for him in the early stages of the race and then didn't have the clearest of runs at the business end.

I think he ran much better than his finishing position suggested. I couldn't be happier with the way he has come out of the race so I have made an entry for him this Saturday at Newmarket in the Criterion Stakes (Group 3) over 7f. I will see how he is later in the week before deciding whether to declare or not on Thursday.

Cieren Fallon didn't believe he had a hard race on Friday. If he doesn't run on Saturday there is a 7 furlongs listed race at Chester on 10th July. He will also be entered in the early closing Lennox Stakes (Group 2) tomorrow at Glorious Goodwood on 22nd July.

19 June 2021: The LIr Jet ran a great race in the Commonwealth Cup finishing seventh

Discussions took place whether or not to run him on the heavy ground but we made the decision to take our chance. He was slightly slowly away but ran on extremely well suggesting a step up in trip will suit.

Cieren Fallon said the ground was bottomless but he stuck his neck out and ran all the way to the line. He took to the visor and tongue strap well. He’s come out of his race in great shape and will be a really fun horse for the rest of the season.

We’ll be in touch after the weekend.

17 June 2021: The Lir Jet Commonwealth Cup Preview

The Lir Jet runs tomorrow at Royal Ascot in the Group 1 Commonwealth Cup over 6 furlongs for 3-year-old colts and fillies at 3.40pm live on ITV.

Cieren Fallon has been booked to ride. He is drawn in stall 5 of 21, however Saint Lawrence is already a non-runner.

The Lir Jet’s run at Haydock in the Sandy Lane last month was very disappointing when he went off joint-favourite but it’s a race we can put a line through. He seemed to lose his action halfway through the race on extremely testing ground and as a result didn’t have a hard race.

He is a Royal Ascot winner having won the Norfolk Stakes last year so he is more than entitled to be in the line up tomorrow.

As expected, it is a very hot race with Campanelle heading the market for American trainer Wesley Ward and is ridden by Frankie Dettori. She won the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot last year so is hugely respected. A negative would be that she hasn’t run for 224 days, last seen finishing 4th at the Breeders Cup. It is reported her work has been good since arriving in the UK.

The French raider Suesa has won all her four starts to date and will appreciate plenty of rain. She is still very unexposed and seems to be progressing with every run but tomorrow again represents a step up in class for her.

Dragon Symbol who was joint-favourite with The Lir Jet at Haydock last time out was narrowly denied being beaten a nose. This was his first defeat in his five-race career and a quicker surface tomorrow will suit and looks another major contender with Oisin Murphy on board.

Others to note are the Clive Cox pair of Supremacy and Diligent Harry. Supremacy was a Group 1 winner last autumn but made a very disappointing seasonal reappearance but could easily bounce back to form. He is top rated in the race on 118 and wears blinkers for the first time.

Diligent Harry bypassed the Sandy Lane due to heavy ground and comes into this a fresh horse. He is yet to race on turf so it will be interesting to see how he handles the surface.

Michael Bell reported today “The Lir Jet is in very good form. We’re going to run him in a visor and also put a tongue strap on him. He actually scoped very well but I feel just to rule out the chances of swallowing a tongue we’re going to put a tongue strap on. We tried it on him on the gallops as well as the visor and he was very happy in them.

He has very good course form and I firmly believe that Ascot is a course for horses for courses and I’m expecting a big run. The horse looks great but he doesn’t want torrential rain but Ascot can definitely take plenty of rain so hopefully it doesn’t get too soft after the rain forecast.

We just want it to be a level playing field which it looks like being and the horse is in really good shape so fingers crossed for a good run and let's hope RacehorseClub are somewhere near the podium if not on it! I’m really looking forward to meeting the ticket ballot winners on what promises to be a great day's racing."

The Lir Jet is currently priced around 40/1 in places which looks good each way value.
